Sophia Academy is a Marist-sponsored school seeking Catholic status. A faith-based education reinforces the disciplines of thinking intellectually, behaving morally, and serving others with the love of Christ. Sophia Academy holds a Judeo-Christian worldview that is carried out by fostering an environment that is pervasively spiritual in nature, promoting Christian values and virtues. Curriculum Overview:

All students from K-5th grades will learn about the Mass, prayer, and service to the community through service projects during the year. They will have a half day retreat on campus.

Middle School and High School students will have additional opportunities for hands-on involvement in the Liturgy, be further enriched through the understanding of prayers and engage in additional service to the community. They will attend an off-campus retreat.

Pre-Kindergarten:            Stories of God’s Love (RCL Benziger)

Our students will learn about God, their families and their communities through prayer, stories, story-telling and music. They will learn about Advent, Christmas, Lent and the Easter seasons.

Kindergarten:                    Faith First (RCL Benziger)

Our students will understand that they are children of God.  He loves them so much that He gave them many gifts. They will learn how the gift of their senses lets them appreciate His creation, their gift of family and know that they are God’s greatest gift. They will learn about Jesus and their Baptism, which makes them members of the Church. They will learn about making good choices. They will learn about Advent, Christmas, Lent and the Easter seasons.

First Grade:                        Faith First Legacy (RCL Benziger)

Our students will understand that God is our Creator and Father, that Jesus is the Son of God and that the Holy Spirit is our helper. They will be introduced to the community of God, the Ten Commandments, stories of the Old and New Testament, prayers, and Advent, Christmas, Lent and the Easter seasons.

Second Grade:                  Faith First Legacy (RCL Benziger)

This grade is a sacramental year for students who receive their First Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist. The students will learn about the parts of the Mass. They will learn about God and his plan for us through stories in the Old and New Testament, prayer, the Sacraments and the Ten Commandments. They will learn about Advent, Christmas, Lent and the Easter seasons.

Third Grade:                      Faith First Legacy (RCL Benziger)

The third grade students will learn more about the Trinity; the role of the Holy Spirit and Jesus as Savior,  the Blessed Mother, the Apostles, The New and Old Testament, the Ten Commandments and the Great Commandment. They will learn the importance of caring for God’s world and stewardship. They will compare the creeds and learn intercessory prayers.

Fourth Grade:                   Faith First Legacy (RCL Benziger)

The students will learn about God’s plan for salvation, Jesus and the new and everlasting Covenant. They will learn about the Paschal Mystery, the Liturgy of the Church and Divine Providence. The seven Sacraments and the Ten Commandments will be taught with more depth as will the Beatitudes, moral virtues and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Fifth Grade:                       Faith First Legacy (RCL Benziger)

The students will discuss Divine Revelation, human desire for God, faith and Biblical inspiration. They will go more in depth as they discuss the historical books, wisdom writings and the prophetic books of the Old Testament. They will continue learning about the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, letters and Revelation in the New Testament. They will learn about the Liturgy of the Church and learn more about the sacraments and the work of the Church. They will discuss moral decisions and learn the Cardinal virtues. They will learn more about prayers and symbolism in Scriptures.

Sixth Grade:                       Faith First Legacy (RCL Benziger)

The students will learn more about the prophets, inspiration of the Bible and the historical books of the Old Testament writings. They will learn about angels, the Incarnation, Jesus as Savior and the New Adam, Pentecost, and Apostolic succession. They will learn about the Old Testament images for the Eucharist. They will discuss the moral virtues, sin and conscience. They will learn about holiness and the freedom of choice.

Seventh Grade:                 The Catholic Connections Handbook for Middle Schoolers Part 1-3         (St. Mary’s Press)

The students will focus on what it means to follow Jesus. The revelation of Jesus as found in the Old Testament. They will learn, through the working of the Holy Spirit, what the Church has passed on through each generation. They will learn in depth about the “People of Faith” as found in the Bible.

Eighth Grade:                    The Catholic Connections Handbook for Middle Schoolers Part 4-6         (St. Mary’s Press)

The students will focus on the Sacraments of Christian Initiation, Healing, and Service of Communion. They will go in depth into the study of the Ten Commandments as impacted by Morality and Justice. They will discuss the depth of prayer, as conversations with God and its impact in their lives.

Ninth Grade:                     Semester One: The Bible: The Living Word of God (St. Mary’s Press)

The students will learn in depth that God is revealed to us through Tradition and Sacred Scripture. They will learn about Vatican II to the present. They will study the Bible, its writings and their contextual understanding, the historical books, wisdom writings and the prophetic books of the Old Testament.

                                          Semester Two: Jesus Christ: God’s Love Made Visible (St. Mary’s Press)

The students will learn how Jesus is alive, present and active in our lives. They will learn about Trinitarian belief, Christological heresies and the Ecumenical Councils of the Church. They will discuss God’s revelation through Sacred Scripture of salvation history, the revelation of God’s plan and our response to Jesus.

Tenth Grade:                     Semester One: The Paschal Mystery: Christ’s Mystery of Salvation,

Eleventh Grade:               Semester One: The Sacraments: Encounters with Christ,
