Curriculum Overview K-8
No two children are alike at Sophia Academy. Each is seen as a unique and perfect creation.
Our program success comes from small class size which allows for individualized and specific instruction. Each student with learning differences receives detailed, personalized goals reviewed frequently, and all students receive subject goals and objectives. For reading and spelling, we use the internationally acclaimed Orton-Gillingham approach. It is sequential and multisensory— letters are learned in specific groups in all learning modalities, which teaches decoding of the English language. Georgia Performance Standards guide the challenging comprehensive curriculum.
Organizing information, both physically and mentally, is imperative to effective learning. The schoolwide, systematic Sophia Academy Organizational System is followed in all classrooms and in student organizers.
For the most engaging instruction, all of our classrooms are equipped with technology, including LCD projectors and white boards. Many classes utilize interactive Promethean boards, which allow for a more hands-on learning environment and encourage student participation. Every Sophia Academy student is evaluated for assistive technology devices and software, which enhance learning, and all students have access to audiovisual textbooks and other books scanned online.
At Sophia Academy, we seek to educate the whole student. All students take part in Art, Music, Computer, Health and Physical Education, which serve as enrichment classes vital to the educational experience. These courses allow students to discover and hone their gifts and talents. In addition, students have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities, from drama to sports to student government. The small school atmosphere gives many opportunities for student leadership and involvement.
Sophia Academy also believes in equipping a child spiritually. The school seeks to develop Christian character by implementing a Christian Character Education curriculum designed to highlight and examine Biblical character traits. The character traits for this year are: Self-Awareness, Penitence, Dedication, Reverence, Peace, Acceptance, Creativity, Determination, and Gratitude. Students review and discuss the monthly character trait and verse each day, and offer prayers before class and throughout the day. Chapel is held weekly and is a time of worship and learning scriptural principles.
Vision Quest Curriculum
The “Vision Quest” is a long-term, cross-curricular unit that integrates core subject areas while supporting the Georgia Performance Standards and multisensory approaches. A curriculum map outlining the content taught in each core subject has been developed. Vision Quest is being implemented into lesson plans in a multitude of ways, ranging from guest speakers (experts from the community) to field trips, projects, books and movies, and/or journals.
