Pursuing Catholic Identity
Sophia Academy is pleased to announce that with the approval of Catholic Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the school will pursue attainment of Catholic identity, to become a Marist sponsored school and be affiliated with the Society of Mary in 2012.
In its thirteenth year, the pre-K through 8th grade non-denominational Christian school has served students who need personalized education with individual learning plans in small classes. Teachers are specially trained in multisensory instruction, including the internationally acclaimed Orton-Gillingham approach. Recently re-accredited, the SAIS –SACS team noted that the “the school has a comprehensive curriculum that includes instruction in art, theater, music, physical education, technology, and leadership that are available at a level rare in a small school.”
The school would continue to operate as an independent school, led by Founding Director Marie Corrigan. “We look forward to this process as a way to strengthen the faith identity of our school and lead more students in a values-based education. The Marists have 150 years of experience in education, and part of their mission is to serve the underserved as well. We are honored to be considered in the family of those serving faithfully for centuries.”
